Playlist Thursday // Eternal Flame

Thursday, June 4, 2015

1 // Eternal Flame by The Bangles

Gilmore Girls marathon was happening on some channel and The Bangles concert episode was on. I revisited this gem from my days road tripping to yellowstone and listening to a Love Songs from the 70's, 80's, and 90's CD that my parents got at Fred Meyer. Those were the days.

2 // One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey

Oh Mariah. Oh Boyz II Men. Thanks for creating an anthem with a powerful message and the best chorus for singing in front of the mirror or on your snapchat (so dang guilty).

Can we talk about how nerdy the Boyz II Men look?

3 // Lonely Town by Brandon Flowers

GUYS. This is my jam.

4 // Between Me and You by Brandon Flowers

Tears. This song is beautiful. Anyone looking for a good wedding video song, this is it.

5 // The Way It's Always Been by Brandon Flowers

I can't help but hear so many religious allusions in this song. Ya feel me? No? Okay. It's just me then.

6 // Dreams Come True by Brandon Flowers

The ending of this song is EVERYTHING. Let's get real, this song is everything. It's ironic. It's sassy. It's sarcastic. It's hopeful.

"I've got miles per hour, lady."
"If you see things a little different, I'm not casting any stones."

7 // Man on Fire by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Thank you Parenthood for having the best music. I'm always shazam-ing the heck out of you.

8 // A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow by Mitch and Mickey

Has anyone else seen A Mighty Wind? Oh man, it's good. It's on Amazon Prime if you have it. I love Mockumentary style films. This one has great music too. I cried during this song and it was supposed to be cheesy and funny, but of course, I cried.

9 // First by Cold War Kids

Ooo I like his voice.

10 // Classic by MKTO

This has a stellar beat and the guys voice is so interesting. It's a quirky and little muppet-y, but I really like it. Also, he mentions getting it on like Marvin Gaye and that's sexy. So there.

11 // Honey, I'm Good by Andy Grammar

Ok so I watched the American Idol finale with my in-laws and that Nathan (Nick) idk the guy who won sang this song with Andy Grammar and it was darn catchy. I'm a sucker for claps in songs, and I'm a total sucker for the darling music video.

12 // Don't Dream It's Over by Miley Cyrus and Ariana  Grande

An amazing cover with a few f-bombs in there, so be careful. But seriously, these girls need to collab more often. Miley Cyrus is a guilty pleasure. She's crazy, but I love her. Oh and Ariana Grande's voice really is unreal.

13 // B!tch Better Have My Money by Rihanna

Sorry mom, don't listen to this song. I can't get enough of it. I know. If you want a more wholesome version, check out Kelly Clarkson's cover, but don't read the comment section. It's infuriating and I guess you can read it if you want to see body-shaming comments. So annoying, but she rocks the song.

Don't act like you forgot, I call the shot shot shots.

Not but really, this song is explicit so watch at your own risk. The dancing in this video is rad though.

Playlist Thursday // Jams

Thursday, May 21, 2015

On the first Thursday of my time here in California, Abby invited me to a relief society activity. The activity was supposed to be "Retro" and it was. We decorated cupcakes and ate retro salads loaded with mayo and jello (and I gagged once, okay maybe twice) (no but really some of the stuff was pretty delicious), I bonded with a really sweet lady and then we made jams...

Now here are some non-edible jams you should listen to.

1 // Lonely Town by Brandon Flowers

Brandon Flowers, what a guy. I'm jamming to this one all day long. Singing along with the choir and trying not to think about how the lyrics are slightly creepy. If you haven't checked out his new album The Desired Effect, have no fear, I'm sharing some of the songs right...now. (I didn't want to rhyme, because I didn't want tomatoes thrown at me.)

2 // The Way It's Always Been by Brandon Flowers

THIS SONG IS CHOCK FULL OF RELIGIOUS ALLUSIONS AND IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME THEN....I don't know what would happen. GUYS JUST LISTEN TO IT AND TELL ME "WAITING FOR THE SUN TO COME AGAIN" IS NOT A RELIGIOUS ALLUSION.

3 // Can't Deny My Love by Brandon Flowers

80's inspired. Can't deny it's the way to my heart. Ok Dani, enough.

4 // Rather Be by Clean Bandit

This is my "lip-sync in the car and in front of the mirror and when I'm alone driving to Von's to pick up Ben and Jerry's ice cream" song.

5 // Chandelier by Sia (Piano Version)

I listen to this about 50 times a day. Singing goals. Sia embodies all of my singing goals. How could you deny the beauty of that voice? You absolutely can't. *weeps bitterly*

Happy listening.

Playlist Thursday // Soft

Thursday, April 9, 2015

//
Only soft tunes here today. Tunes so soft and so beautiful your heart aches for a chick-flick, you've got mail-induced cry-fest.

1 // Tee Shirt by Birdy

Not even ashamed to say I heard this at DownEast Basics and couldn't get over how much I loved it. I shazamed it sooooo fast.

2 // A Case of You (Joni Mitchell cover) by James Blake

Joni Mitchell is right up there with Stevie for me. Blue is one of the best albums ever written. It's so heart wrenching and I love it with all of my heart. This is James Blake covering it, and the whole time I'm wondering why he didn't make it big like Sam Smith...HE WAS BEFORE SAM SMITH?! Sam Smith, I know you're not the only one with the voice of an angel. See what I did there? I'm so embarrassed for myself.

3 // Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Playlist Thursday // New Glasses

Thursday, March 12, 2015

So I tried #WarbyParkerHomeTryOn is that the hashtag? I have no idea! And I already knew which ones I wanted, but I did the try on anyway just to get a feel of Warby Parker, and a feel I did get and love I did find.

These are my new glasses. Name coming soon. Style coming soon. Premiere of these glasses coming soon. They are my favorite things ever. Although they are not totally black, and although I've never seen her in tortoise glasses, I feel like Jenna Lyons.

Right when I tried them on Ty said, "Oh, I like those! I'll have to get used to them, but I like those a lot." That's the thing about glasses, you get so used to them being on your face every day that it's like getting a whole new set of eyes. It's like welcoming a new friend to the party. It's like introducing that cooler more stylish friend to all your mediocre friends (my face ;) ;) ;)) it's like a fresh coat of paint and style.

You may think they're over the top I think they are the greatest thing to ever happen to my face.

Ok....one more thing though. I don't know if I can actually get them, because I don't know if Warby Parker will take my prescription. I have pretty terrible eye balls. Really great eye balls because I can still see, but they are progressively getting more blurry as the years go on, so cross your fingers and pray for me, because I need new specs, stats. The ones i have are falling apart. So pray! #PrayForDanisEyesSoTheyCanHaveNewGlassesFromWarbyParker. Spread that around, okay?

So if the stars align, a glasses unveiling will come up in a couple of weeks or like a month, but for now, here's a playlist.

P.S. Sorry about not having links, blogger hates me tonight. Why, Blogger!? After all we've been through. You grotsky little....

1 // Sedated by Hozier

2 // Work Song by Hozier

3 // Take Me To Church (Hozier cover) by Ellie Goulding

4 // Roslyn by Bon Iver feat. St. Vincent

5 // Adore You by Miley Cyrus

6 // Ten Cent Pistol by The Black Keys

7 // Ya Hey by Vampire Weekend

Playlist Thursday // Sort of...

Thursday, January 29, 2015

First, these two quotes:

//

And this one that I found on Twitter:

"We get so worried about being pretty. Let’s be pretty kind. Pretty funny. Pretty smart. Pretty strong.”

You could have a million followers. You could have the best hair. You could have all the riches in the world and all the people of the world flocking to be like you or get recognized by you, but if you aren't worth knowing...if you're not kind...if you're not doing good for the world, if you're not giving back...you're not worth anything. Even if you're well known.

Second, a mini playlist:

Funny thing about this song. I heard it while shopping at The Gap a few months ago, and I didn't have time to Shazam it, or I tried to and it didn't pick up. So I went months with it stuck in my head, but I wasn't able to remember the lyrics and I was just searching and searching. Well, today I found it on Spotify. I was just sampling a playlist, and yoo-hoo it was there. Fate, I tell you. Fate.

This guy is so much more than "Take Me To Church." His music is great. His voice is butter. His soul is rad.

GUYS. I don't even know why. I'm not sorry for loving this song. It makes me want to walk like three men are walking behind me. It's my jam right now. Pass judgments now if you please.

This song. I'm obsessed. I'm late on the bandwagon for this one. It's so groovy and like Bob Dylan said, "Either be groovy or leave, man." Plus, I LOVE how they performed it on Ellen.

This song is everywhere now. Like everywhere, but it's still great. This guy has one of the best "yell-sing" voices I've ever heard. So yeahhhhh. I don't know what else to say.

THIS VERSION. MAAAAJOR. I used to be a 90's rock hater, now I'm a big fan thanks to being an Abbott.

Playlist Thursday // Cerebral

Thursday, January 8, 2015

The other day Tyler told me that I like cerebral music. You know that moody stuff that really gets to your brain with dissonance and perfect harmonies at the perfect moments? Actually, I don't really know what that means, but it makes sense.

Funny thing is...I looked up cerebral in the dictionary and it said this:

Intellectual, rather than emotional or physical.

Psh...dictionary. All of my musical is emotional.

1. Misguided Ghosts by Paramore

2. Brothers on a Hotel Bed by Death Cab for Cutie

3. Summer Skin by Death Cab for Cutie

4. Waiting Game by Banks

5. Take Me to Church (Acoustic) by Hozier

6. Turning Page (Sleeping at Last cover) by Native Men

7. Stay With Me (Sam Smith Cover) by Florence Welch

Ugh, this is beautiful.

8. Love Me Harder by Ariana Grande

9. Sunrise by Norah Jones

10. Stay Alive by Jose Gonzalez

11. Thunder Clatter by Wild Cub

12. I Bet My Life by Imagine Dragons

Anyone else have the feeling this was written to his mom?

13. Elastic Heart by Sia

14. That's What's Up by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Playlist Thursday // Same old songs, different day

Thursday, October 2, 2014

Ugh. This album cover is the dreamiest. I want to go be a bohemian gypsy woman now. Is that too much to ask? Yeah probably.

No but really. Don't act all surprised. You know the songs are all the same.

1 // Dreams by Fleetwood Mac

Favorite song of all time. Yes it is. Straight up. I think I've said this fifty times, but I just can't get over it. It's lyrically beautiful. Stevie's voice is like the total essence of smoky folky. She's like a witch and I love it. I know, so creepy and weird but Stevie Nicks is my spirit animal, right along with Pocahontas.

2 // Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac

I mean, she even straight up says she's a gypsy! Sing it, Stevie.

3 // Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

"Well, I've been afraid of changing 'cause I've built my life around you. But time makes you bolder, even children get older, and I'm getting older too."

4 // Oh Daddy by Fleetwood Mac

5 // I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt

"I can't make you love me, if you don't. You can't make your heart feel something it won't."

This song is incredibly gut-wrenching. I remember when I was young and dramatic...oh wait. Anyway, yeah when I was in love with this guy in high school and I thought he loved me too, but wah waaaah of course he didn't. I abused this song. Like I played it until it couldn't be played anymore. (Was that too soon to use the "abuse" word?)

6 // Conrad by Ben Howard

7 // I Forget Where We Were by Ben Howard

Oh, hey,
I wasn't listening
I was watching Syria blinded by the sunshine strip
You, you were in the kitchen
Oh, your mariner’s mouth the wounded with the wounder's whip

And that's how summer passed oh,
The great divide and range of green green grass
Oh, maybe it was peace at last, who knew

Hello love, my invincible friend
Hello love, the thistle and the burr
Hello love, for you I have so many words
But I, I forget where we were

Oh, hey,
I wasn't listening,
I was stung by all of us, the blind leading out the bored
And as per usual,
You were skipping and laughing eyes at the bedroom door

This song, you guys. I can't even. I just can't. I have listened to it like 20 times a day.

8 // End of the Affair by Ben Howard

9 // Afire Love by Ed Sheeran

"And my father and all of my family rise from their seats to sing hallelujah."

The end of this song is the best.

10 // Beth/Rest by Bon Iver

"I ain't living in the dark no more, it's not a promise I'm just gonna call it."

What are you listening to?

Oh well, again. I hope you enjoyed.

Playlist Thursday // Jolene

Thursday, June 19, 2014

p h o t o

Ray Lamontagne combined with Rainymood. Oh it's perfect. Makes me wish a little for the Fall. He is coming to Utah this Summer, to Red Butte Gardens, and of course the tickets are sold out. Oh well. Enjoy my favorite song by him in this playlist.

" I found myself face down in the ditch, booze in my hair and blood on my lips. A picture of you holding a picture of me in the pocket of my blue jeans. Still don't know what love means...Jolene."

Guys. The saxophone. M83 is so good. Also...so was Divergent. Cheesy but so good. So cheesy.

"What's wrong with you is good for what's wrong with me, and I think maybe we should stick together."

"When I give my heart...it will be completely. And the moment I can feel that, you feel that way too. Yes, when I give my heart to you."

"Call it magic. Call it true. Call it magic when I'm with you. And I just got broken...broken in two. Still call it magic when I'm next to you."

"I ain't living in the dark no more; it's not a promise I'm just gonna call it."

Oh my friends, it has been too long. I promise I would have written more if I hadn't been busy running thousands of errands and finding new church clothes. Oh and my internet has been the pits. You know how it is. Well, at work, we are allowed to listen to music during our office hours and let me tell you, I have discovered some beauties. Enjoy!

1 // Midnight by Coldplay

I really love the sound of this song. It is absolutely beautiful. Plus, I thought it was Bon Iver. Don't get me wrong, I love Coldplay's original sound, but this also works for them.

2 //  Gotta Get Away by The Black Keys

Catchy with great lyrics. Who could ask for more? Dan Auerbach, people.

3 // Wildest Moments- Acoustic by Jessie Ware

4 // Gimme Sympathy- Acoustic by Metric

One of my favorite songs, ever. The original version is perfect and this one is even better. It's ALL good.

Playlist Thursday: Some favorites

Friday, February 21, 2014

This week I have been listening to a few new things but mostly the oldie but goodie ones that I've discovered throughout my three college years.

Do you have those songs? The ones that remind you of moments. A few of these songs remind me of summer. First love. New friends. And my old apartment at SingleTree. Feel free to share some songs that do nostalgia for you.

Happy listening.

1. Hiding Out by Sucre

This reminds me SO much for my friend Karly Catto. She is currently serving a mission in Washington, and I miss her quite terribly. This came up on my shuffle and I freaked a little. I was reminded of its absolute beauty. Sucre has the voice of dreams. Just listening to this song reminds me of Karly's profound wisdom and kindness. God bless you, Sister Catto!

2. If Only I by Jon Mclaughlin

I heard this on the Vampires Diaries like so long ago and I was hooked.

3. Sun by Sleeping at Last

The beauty.  I can't even.

4. Mercury by Sleeping at Last

5. Call Your Girlfriend by Robyn

This is on my ultimate playlist, because it is ULTIMATE. It really is. The music video. The beats. The dance. Robyn. All of it. Like this song epitomized my sophomore year of college.

6. God Made Man by Young the Giant

7. Cough Syrup by Young the Giant

8. My Blood by Ellie Goulding

9. I See Fire by Ed Sheeran

I know, it's The Hobbit song...but guys. OH my gosh. Ed Sheeran. His voice melts me. I have to get "+". Why haven't I done that yet?

10. Heart Attack by Demi Lovato

#GirlPower

11. A Life That's Good by Lennon and Maisy

If I am having a bad day, I will listen to this song and everything feels alright.

12. Shot at the Night by The Killers

This is my newest favorite. It's always in my head.

Valentine's Gift Playlist

Thursday, February 13, 2014

I got Tyler CD's for Valentine's Day. It was a gift to myself, because we get to listen to them in the car. Killed two birds with one stone. Staying rad one day at a time.

1. Everlasting Light by The Black Keys

"Let me be your everlasting light. Your sun when there is none. I'm a shepherd for you, and I'll guide you through. Let me be your everlasting light."

The Black Keys...the dreamiest of dreamboats.

2. Howlin' For You by The Black Keys

3. Tighten Up by The Black Keys

In love.

4. Things We Lost in the Fire by Bastille

5. The Silence by Bastille

Bonus tracks are so beyond.

6. Flaws by Bastille

7. Shot at the Night by The Killers

8. Read My Mind by The Killers

Tyler's favorite.

9. When You Were Young by The Killers

My favorite.

10. Don't You Want Me by Bahamas and The Weather Station

Uh. This is greatness. So is the whole Walter Mitty soundtrack.

11. Tin Lover by The Paper Kites

Always have, always will love The Paper Kites.

12. Adore You by Miley Cyrus

Don't judge. This is stuck in my head like every morning. Plus it's sexy. Yeah, I said that. AGAIN! Eh, it's Valentine's Day. Whateverrrr.

Happy listening. Stay gold.

If you ever need to find me I can still be found taking the long way around...

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

This has been a week of busy-ness, stress, and tears. Tyler has had to comfort me to sleep once or twice.

A tender mercy has appeared though, because it has also been a week of beautiful music. I hope you enjoy these playlist picks as much as I have.

1. Fish and Whistle by John Prine

"Father forgive us for what we must do; you forgive us and we'll forgive you. We'll forgive each other 'til we both turn blue and go fish and whistle in heaven."

2. Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me by The Lower Lights

"May I hear thee say to me, 'Fear not; I will pilot thee.'"

Oh The Lower Lights. They are the loveliest.

3. A Quarter Century by Carter Burwell from The True Grit Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

True Grit is one of my favorite movies ever. The Coen brothers recreated the masterpiece beautifully. The soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous. I love this old hymn. So peaceful and contemplative.

4. The Wicked Flee by Carter Burwell from The True Grit Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

5. Keep on The Sunny Side by The Whites

"Keep on the sunny side, always on the sunny side. Keep on the sunny side of life."

This song is so stinking happy. I love it to pieces.

6. You Are My Sunshine by Elizabeth Mitchell

7. Gale Song by The Lumineers

"Oh this too shall pass..."

This song is beyond.

8. The Long Way Around by The Dixie Chicks

"I've been long time gone now maybe someday, someday I'm gonna settle but I always find my way somehow by taking the long way around."

This song described my senior year of high school and freshman year of college. I'd like to think it describes my life. Gypsy living with Tyler.

9. Landslide by Fleetwood Mac (this version, and this version too)

"Oh mirror in the sky, what is love?"

10. Shot at The Night by The Killers

Holy crap, this is good. So good. Like where has this been? Brandon...I love you. So does Tyler so it's okay.

11. Riptide by Vance Joy

"Closest thing to Michelle Pfeiffer you have ever seen."

This song is summer.

12. Old Pine by Ben Howard

I know, this has been in my last three playlists, but I'm really obsessed. I just can't get enough. The guitar...

Last but not least...my absolute favorite song right now. If Tyler and I hadn't heard Amazing Eyes before this song, it would have been our wedding song.

13. Fare Thee Well (Dink's Song)  by Oscar Isaac and Marcus Mumford

"If I had wings like Noah's dove
I'd fly the river to the one that I love

Fare thee well, my honey fare thee well

I had a man, who was long and tall
He moved his body like a cannon ball
Fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well

I remember one evening in the pouring rain
And in my heart there was an aching pain
Fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well

Muddy river runs muddy and wild
You can't give a bloody for my unborn child
Fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well

Just as sure as the birds are flying high
Life ain't worth living if you ain't with the one you love
Fare thee well, my honey, fare thee well"

I really want to see Inside Llewyn Davis. The soundtrack is fantastic. It makes me cry, it's that good. Oh gosh...every time I hear it I get choked up. Even as I'm writing this. Talor if you are reading this...you NEED to hear this song.

What songs have you been listening to lately? Any ones you would like to share? Please do!
Happy listening, as usual.
Stay gold.
